How to Store Kid Costumes After Halloween

Halloween is a fun time for kids to dress up as their favorite characters and go trick-or-treating. But what do you do with all those costumes after the spooky night is over? Do you toss them in a closet, a box, or a bag and forget about them until next year? Or do you find a way to store them properly and keep them in good condition?

In this post, I will share some tips on how to store kid costumes after Halloween.

Clean the Costumes

The first step is to clean the costumes before storing them. This will help prevent stains, odors, and damage from dirt, candy, or makeup. Depending on the material and care instructions of the costume, you can either wash it by hand or machine, or dry clean it. If the costume has any accessories, such as hats, masks, wigs, or jewelry, you should also clean them gently with a damp cloth or a soft brush.

Choose the Right Containers

The next step is to choose the right containers for your costumes. The best containers are storage totes with latched lids, which will keep out dust, moisture, and pests. You can find them in different sizes and colors at most big-box stores.

Label each container with the name of the costume and the size of the child who wore it. You can also use clear or transparent ones if possible. This will help you identify the contents at a glance.

Fold or Hang the Costumes

The third step is to fold or hang the costumes inside the containers. If the costume is made of fabric that wrinkles easily, such as satin or velvet, you may want to hang it on a padded hanger and cover it with a garment bag. If the costume is made of fabric that does not wrinkle easily, such as polyester or cotton, you can fold it neatly and place it in a plastic bag.

If the costume has any bulky or delicate parts, such as wings, horns, or tails, you may want to detach them and store them separately in smaller containers or bags.

Find the Best Storage Spot

The last step is to find the best storage spot for your containers. Depending on the size and number of your containers, you can store them in various places, such as:

  • Closet: Use shelves, racks, or hooks to store your containers in a closet. You can also use hanging organizers or over-the-door pockets for smaller accessories.
  • Under the bed: Slide your containers under the bed or use bed risers to create more space. You can also use rolling drawers or bins for easy access.
  • Attic or basement: If you have an attic or basement, you can store your containers there. Just make sure they are well-sealed and protected from temperature changes and humidity.
  • Storage unit: If you have no space at home, you can rent a storage unit to store your costumes.

Conclusion

Storing kid costumes after Halloween can be easy and fun if you follow these tips. By cleaning, choosing, folding, hanging, and finding the right containers and storage spots, you can keep your costumes safe and organized until next year.

I hope you enjoyed this blog post and found it helpful. Happy Halloween! 🎃

A Couple of Cute Bunnies

These two bunnies never cease to amaze. They’re always zooming about and playing.

Lately, they’ve taken to the corners of their room beside the window. They moved one of their boxes to the corner of one side. On the other side, they have a little cat house that they love to move around!

It makes me so happy that they are so comfortable in their forever home! The other day, I came into their room to check on them. I found them like this. Sam was completely stretched out having a snooze, and Max was enjoying snacking on her hay.

Max absolutely loves the camera. Every time I get close to her for a picture, she comes up and boops the camera. She’s such a sweetie.

Sam loves to be close to his humans. The other day, I had to go run some errands. He just sat there by his toy truck and glared at me when I told him I was heading out for a while.

There’s nothing like a good nap after playing hard. These bunnies just love stretching out on their blanket and having a snooze!

Sam and Max – Adventures in Bunny Land

Our Holland Lops, Sam and Max, love to have adventures around their room.

Sam is very proud of himself. It took him days, but he and his sister managed to get this pop tart box over there from across the far end of the room. They both worked hard, shifting it behind the couch!

Some days, they like to get brave and explore the kitchen. But when they do that, they prefer to sit on somebody’s lap (because the floor is lava).

Sam decided once, that he was going to be brave and explore the kitchen on his own. That lasted maybe 5 minutes (which is great)!

Max loves her tunnels and anything she can hide in. We recently picked up a new cave for her to use along with her rainbow tunnel.

When she’s not busy exploring, they love the foraging box we made them. We used a leftover cup carrier, filled it with their hay and some treats, and let them at it.

Max couldn’t wait for me to finish up with their cage cleaning one day, and got into the box before it was put back. She had a great time sticking her head right in there!

For Sam, there’s really nothing quite like stories from his favourite little human. This photo is actually the result of him nudging at books on the shelf until she took one down and read to him.

He also enjoys snuggles with her.

After a busy day of exploring, there’s nothing quite like a good flop. Sam loves to use lower part of the coffee table as a chin rest. Max likes to stretch out.

Sewing the Moondance – Notepad Holder

Two notepad holders. One is 3x5", the other is 5x8"

The notepad holder by Sincerely Jen Patterns is so much fun to make. I just started with my first two, but I can already tell that I’m going to be needing to make more.

3x5"notepad holder, closed

The first one I made using outdoor vinyl from Fabricland. This one is the small size, which holds a small (3″x5″) notepad. Which is going to be great for holding my kid’s communication notebook for school. I added a pen holder as well.

3"x5" notepad holder, open

Definitely the first (of many to come) Moondances. I consider myself a beginner when it comes to sewing vinyl. I used my walking foot, and a microtex needle for it. When it was done, I trimmed a little to close to the edge so I had to redo a little bit of stitching. Oops! You can’t really tell though. The fabric in the middle is so soft, it feels almost like suede!

Second Moondance to be sewn up was made using vinyl from Bare Necessities Fabrics. Got to love these zombies! This time there’s an elastic on the holder, just to hold it shut when not in use. I did much better with the seams this time. There wasn’t a lot that needed to be trimmed.

5"x8" notepad holder, open

After it was all sewn up, the notepad that was meant to fit it ended up being too big. What to do? Make a new notepad and resize it to fit the notepad? Nope! Cut the notepad to fit the holder. That works, right?

Two notepad holders. One is 3x5", the other is 5x8"

Here are the two Moondance Notepad Holders together for size comparison. The larger one (with zombies) will fit nicely in a purse or backpack. The small one would easily fit in a pocket.

Off to make more of these!

Sewing Challenge: Week 1

From Scraps to Fabulous!

Do you ever look at something you have to do, and it just feels like way too much?

That’s was my first thought when I started looking, like, really looking at my pile of scraps. Almost like there’s no way I can get all of this dwindled down to nearly nothing in the next few months! I’m still wondering if I will. But, I set this challenge for myself. I will follow through!

So far, I’ve made these fun socks with a couple of cotton lycra scraps from 5 Oceans Fabrics (purchased under their previous name, Fabric Geeks). They are so soft and comfy!

Handcrafted pair of socks in black, white, and grey striped cotton lycra fabric.

And these cute little snack pouches. I used a piece of canvas scrap for the exteriors.

Both patterns are from Ellie and Mac.

Scrap Pile Challenge

From Scraps to Fabulous!

Ok, so I was in my sewing room. I was going to start working on a new project, but I just couldn’t get myself into it. It wasn’t that I didn’t have my sewjo. The problem was, well, IS, this humongous pile of scrap fabric that is staring at me every time I walk into the room.

Something has to be done.

I don’t throw fabric away (of course), so that’s a no for just tossing it. There has to be something I can do with that 3″x3″ scrap, right?

So, I decided that I’m going to challenge myself to sew as much of it as I can during the next few weeks. Whatever’s left, I think that I’ll either continue to sew in August, or donate to the local school for art projects!

Come back next week to see how the progess is going!
